In "The Gingerbread Man" by Bruno Merz, a magical gingerbread man springs to life and embarks on an adventurous escape from the hands of those who wish to eat him. As he runs away, he encounters various characters—farmers, animals, and others—who try to catch him but are repeatedly outsmarted. Bold and quick-witted, the Gingerbread Man thrives on his freedom, proclaiming his speed and cleverness with the famous line, "Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!" However, his journey ultimately teaches him important lessons about pride, safety, and the value of companionship. This book contains the following story:

The Gingerbread Man
A childess woman bakes herself a gingerbread boy but when she opens the oven he escapes out of the house and down the street. The old woman runs after him as he cries, ‘Run, run as fast as you can, you’ll never catch me I’m the Gingerbread Man’. Several animals join the chase as the Gingerbread man looks good enough to eat, but none can catch him. Soon the Gingerbread Man comes to river which he cannot cross alone. A sly old fox offers to take him across and the Gingerbread Man climbs onto his tail, but as they cross the river the fox persuades him to jump onto his nose to avoid getting wet. Then the fox eats the Gingerbread Man all up. Yum!
