A key stage is any of the fixed stages into which the national curriculum is divided, each having its own prescribed course of study. At the end of each stage, pupils are required to complete standard assessment tasks. KS3 covers school years 7, 8 and 9, and ages 12-14 years. KS2 covers school years 4, 5 and 6, and ages 8-11 years.

Brian Speed was formally Chief Examiner for GCSE maths for AQA(NEAB) and has worked for QCA on KS3 testing; Keith Gordon is Chief Examiner for GCSE mathematics for AQA(A); Kevin Evans is an examiner for GCSE mathematics for AQA(A). All authors are currently teaching mathematics. Keith Gordon was formerly Head of Maths at Wath Comprehensive School in South Yorkshire. He is a team leader for KS3 Maths National Test marking. Collectively, Evans, Gordon, Speed and Senior have over 100 years of teaching experience, both in the classroom and leading maths departments. They all currently hold senior positions within examining bodies and have been extensively involved in the development and piloting of new specifications.
