John, Wayne, and Duke are Belgian draft horses that work together to draw a wagon on Mackinac Island, Michigan. They are so used to being together, they walk around in the same order even when theyre not working. One day a new stable boy teams them up differently, and the hijinks begin.

Bob Artley (1917-2011) was the celebrated illustrator of more than ten books. His career began more than fifty years ago as an editorial cartoonist. He spent most of his time with the Des Moines Tribune and the Worthington (Minnesota) Daily Globe. In retirement, he devoted most of his time to children's books. He wrote and illustrated Once Upon a Farm, Memories of a Farm Kitchen, Christmas on the Farm, Living With Pigs, and Step Up!, also published by Pelican. Cathe Hahn is the owner of a sail-making company in Harbor Springs, Michigan. She was inspired to write this story after she took her two little girls on a carriage ride around the island.
