All kinds of animals feature in these ten sparkling stories from all over Africa, by an award-winning author and illustrator. Find out what happens to Lion when he challenges Elephant and discovers who is the real king of the savannah; laugh along with Tortoise as he bewitches the animals in Leopard s work-party with his irresistible music; find out why Hippo has no hair, how Elephant got his trunk, and why Cockerel crows. Then read about the woman who had a mouse-child! The stories are drawn from the rich folklore of Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Malawi, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and are perfectly matched by Piet Grobler s wonderful illustrations.

Piet Grobler was born in South Africa. He studied theology, journalism and graphic design. Piet has won many awards around the world for his illustrations, including in Italy and China. His previous titles published by Lemniscaat are Hey Frog! and Antonia by Anke de Vries. Beverley Naidoo is a South-African born writer and an educationalist. Apartheid prevented her and her Indian husband living in their country of birth, so they moved to Bournemouth, where Beverley is an Advisory Teacher for Cultural Diversity.

Naidoo is unrivalled at encapsulating both story and style within her retellings.

Ten lively stories from across the continent are included in this unusual collection of stories about animals of all kinds. They are just as enchanting as many better-known stories and they are perfect to read aloud.
