On the prairies of Western Canada, winter is barely over when the baby ground squirrels are born. The little ones grow quickly. They learn to find their own food, stay alert, and master the danger calls that keep them safe from predators. By midsummer Mom will disappear underground to hibernate. And while she sleeps, the young ones face the world alone as they fatten themselves up for the long winter ahead.
