Moore (1779-1863) was a writer and professor of literature and theology. He is famously known as the author of "A Visit from St. Nicholas," later called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas. " The poem was first published anonymously in the Troy Sentinel in 1823. Deborah Melmon is the illustrator of over fifty children's picture books, readers, and board books. She has also designed greeting cards, gift wrap, and fabric. She graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and lives in the Bay Area with her terrier, Mack. CAROLINE PITCHER's story Kevin the Blue won the Independent Story of the Year Award in 1993. Caroline's first book for Frances Lincoln was The Snow Whale with Jackie Morris, chosen as one of Child Education's Best Books of 1996 and shortlisted for the 1997 Children's Book Award. Steve Smallman is the author of The Very Greedy Bee , My Dad! , and Don't Wake the Bear, Hare! Emily Gale lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her partner, two children, and two cats. Before that she was a freelance writer in London, publishing a fictional magazine column and several picture books including Doctor Pig and the Just Josie series. Liza Miller studied at Durham University before pursuing a career in children's publishing. She now writes and edits fiction and non-fiction for children of all ages. Polona Lovsin lives in Slovenia, and she trained to become a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. Lynne Benton was born in Bournemouth, but moved to Bath at 18 to train as a teacher, and has lived there ever since. She has taught in several primary schools in the area, as well as working as pianist and receptionist in a Dancing school and bringing up four children. In 1982 she and her husband, Robin, a fellow-teacher and composer, co-wrote a musical play for primary schools based on the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece (still, happily, in print) but it was only when their children began leaving home for university that she began writing seriously. In 1996 she was a prizewinner in the Independent's Children's Story of the Year competition, and since then has had several fiction books published. As well as writing longer novels for older children she enjoys writing humorous "bite-size" stories for younger ones. She welcomes invitations to go into schools and talk to children about her books, since it keeps her in touch with her readers, who she finds a continual source of inspiration. Mark was born in London into a creative family including a pianist, actress and dancer. He was encouraged to draw from an early age going on to study Illustration and Painting at the University of Wolverhampton. He lives with his wife, Geraldine, and their two sons.
