It is widely acknowledge by educators that at the Early Childhood level, learning is best achieved through fun and enjoyable activities and this is exactly the approach taken in the Literacy Starter, this book has been designed to provide an enjoyable way of learning.
Key features of the Literacy Starter include:
- Visual discrimination activities - looking carefully at pictures and shapes to distinguish differences and develop the skills needed to be able to discriminate between shapes of letters. A 'Find the Snake' activity runs throughout the book, encouraging children to look closely at the pictures and develop visual discrimination skills in an enjoyable way.
- Left to right directionality exercises - getting the eyes accustomed to moving left to right across the page.
- Sequencing activities - putting pictures into a logical order to tell a story
- practice in recognising basic phonemes - the sounds associated with the letters of the alphabet. The sounds are taught in the order which children find easiest to learn.
- word-building and word recognition exercises.
- brief instructions for the teacher or parent that appear at the foot of each page.
- detailed guidance in the Literacy Starter Teacher's Resources, available with the course. This is accompanied by the Literacy Starter Activities CD-ROM which is packed with fun activities to consolidate the key language arts skills and initiate ICT literacy.
