When being different can be deadly, Jarrod changes the rules. Jarrod is a young man desperate to prove himself. His mother is the powerful leader of the colony, with no time or patience for any perceived shortcomings within her own family. Because Jarrod once refused to join them, sadistic, bullying peers have selected him as a persistent target. To make things worse, Jarrod is becoming an adult, and he's afraid that the lighthearted teasing relationship he's always had with Emily may be slipping away. Set in a world that has little to recommend it, other than a moderate climate and a lack of major predators. Everything goes well until their first ritual, when the colonists discover that this planet physically responds to their summons. Jarrod is the only one of his age who cannot manifest the magic, a deficiency that allows his enemies to shun him from village life. But Jarrod has his own talents which may prove to be the salvation of the entire colony.
