From Sextant to Sonar looks at the history of maps and navigation, from the oldest known map of the world which was carved in clay, to medieval sea maps complete with monsters, to the maps that resulted from the great age of European exploration. It examines the revolution in maps and map-making brought about by the invention of printing, photography and, most recently , computer technology. It also charts the various methods of navigation used across the centuries from compasses to the latest GPS systems.
