On a late spring morning the American artist Jackson Pollock began work on the canvas that would ultimately come to be known as Number 1, 1950 (Lavender Mist). This is a unique picture book about a great painter and the way in which he worked, perfectly complemented by vibrant watercolour illustrations.

He has illustrated more than 70 books for children. His Pop Corn and Ma Goodness was a Caldecott Honor Book and in 2002 he won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for his picture book, Cold . Mr. Parker lives in West Cornwall, Connecticut.
