Rupert Bear has been a childhood favourite for over 80 years. This edition only includes stories illustrated by Alfred Edmeades Bestall, who was the most popular illustrator of the lovable bear. Produced with careful thought to every detail, this slipcased treasury is going to win over the hearts of all fans, and those meeting Rupert for the first time. It includes an Introduction by Caroline Bott, Bestall's goddaughter and a Foreword by Gyles Brandreth. The stories have been carefully selected to appeal to readers of all ages. It also includes some never-been-seen-before sketches by Bestall kindly donated by Caroline Bott. The treasury format is a proven success for Egmont. Exquisitely designed, with smart black foil on the cover, this book shows Bestall's work at its best. This is the brand new TV series debuted on 8 November 2006 on Five's Milkshake at 7.30 am and on Five Life on 10 December at 9.30 am. Alfred Bestall is best-known worldwide for his stories about Rupert Bear. He started illustrating and writing the Rupert Bear stories for the Daily Express in 1935. His finest artwork and the best, and most popular, stories have been reproduced in this treasury. Great care and sensitivity has been given not to interfere with his original work. Lavishly illustrated, this book captures the imagination. Caroline Bott is the authority on Alfred Bestall and as his goddaughter gives a very personal insight into his work in the Introduction. Prolific broadcaster, presenter, novelist, biographer and former Conservative Party politician, Gyles Brandreth is best-known for his appearances on Countdown and TV AM. In 2006, Brandreth appeared in the BBC Radio 4 comedy Living with the Enemy. Gyles Brandreth is a writer, performer, former MP, and government whip whose career has ranged from hosting "Have I Got News For You" to starring in his own award-winning musical revue in London's West End. Alfred Bestall was born in Burma in 1892. He served in the First World War and on returning became an illustrator for books and magazines. In 1935 he began writing and illustrating Rupert stories for the Daily Express, which he did for 30 years, creating in the process perhaps the best-loved incarnation of the famous bear. He died in Snowdonia in Wales in 1986, aged 93.
