Bernadette Watts was born in Northampton, England, in 1942. She has illustrated over 120 picture books for children, including many traditional tales, in a career spanning several decades. She won the prestigious Japanese Owl Prize for illustration in 1986. She lives in Kent, England. AESOP probably lived in the middle part of the sixth century BC. A statement in Herodotus gives grounds for thinking that he was a slave.

A simple country mouse goes to visit his cousin in his posh house in town and is shown the joys of sophisticated town life. But town living has its costs as well as its benefits - in the form of a predatory dog. The country mouse is glad to return to his simple and safe life in the country.
