When her elderly aunt and guardian dies, Lucy has to go and live with her three cousins. Schooled at home and very proper, little Lucy doesn't get modern kids or the topsy turvy house her cousins live in. But Alice is from a different era and she totally gets Lucy. Which is great, until Victorian Alice starts to get nasty, and Lucy has to decide where she really wants to be. A tale of loneliness, growing up, ghosts and time travel.

I read this back in the 1970s when it was serialised on the TV. It is still one of my favourite books and have I re-read it many times. Pamela Sykes manages to capture Lucy's isolation and her desperate need to belong somewhere. I think this book is a classic.
