Great for age 12-18 years
I lit a candle from the fire and crept through the soundless house to the parlor, where folks had sang and drank a few hours since. The scarf was still there. I picked it up and let it lie for a moment in my hand, just being a servant who picks up after his mistress. Then I hid it quickly neath my clothing, and was a thief. Set in the Great Frost of 1683-84, the "Brother's Story" follows impoverished Kit, as he runs away from his 'simple' twin Christy, leaving his Essex village for London, seeking to better himself. There he finds much to distract him from his guilty conscience: a world of masters and servants, maids and rules, and a frost fair on the frozen river Thames. But can Kit run away forever? This is a touching and authentic adventure through C17th London; not only a fascinating social study of the period but a serious novel confronting morality, responsibility and sexuality with warmth and sensitivity.
