Alice is a lonely only child who hates the boring routine of life in her silent, pale house where everything revolves around a strict timetable devised by her busy parents, who are always preoccupied by their own work. Amy is one of a large, boisterous family who longs for a bit of peace and quiet away from the demands of a noisy household, especially while her mum is in hospital. Catching sight of each other in the Tropical House at the zoo one day, they fervently wish that they were in each other's shoes. Suddenly, as they are smelling the rare Rainbow Orchid, their wish is granted and they change places. At first, they both revel in the situation: unexpected opportunities to help and hinder arise in their new homes and schools and there are moments of misunderstanding and utter chaos. When they eventually realise that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, they find, to their horror, that it isn't so easy to change back again...Peppermint Orchid is a charming work of children's fiction that will appeal to readers aged 9-12 and is reminiscent of The Parent Trap.
