James Stephens, poet and storyteller, was born in Dublin in 1880. From 1915 to 1924 he was registrar of the National Gallery in Dublin. He spent the remaining years of his life in London where he broadcast frequently from the BBC. He died in 1950. Arthur Rackham is acknowledged as one of the leading lights of the golden age of children's book illustration in the 1920s, winning gold medals at both the Milan and Barcelona exhibitions.
